National Assembly Encouraged Corruption on The Country's Civil Service
Lauretta Onochie accused the National Assembly of breeding corruption on the country's civil service
More scandals have continued to take over the Nigerian Senate as an aide to President Muhammadu Buhari has further revealed how the upper chamber encourages corruption in the civil service.
Lauretta Onochie, Buhari’s personal assistant on social media, said the National Assembly’s oversight functions are riddled with corruption. According to her: “When House/Senate committee members with oversight function on any agency is denied special favours by the agencies, the head becomes corrupt.”
She did not give details of what she meant by ‘special favours’ but there had been allegations of nribery between members of the National Assembly and top government officials in the past.
Recently, Hameed Ali, the comptroller-general of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) was disgraced for reportedly refusing to wear the agency’s uniform when he appeared before the Senate. Days later, a scandal erupted concerning a bullet-proof sports utility vehicle allegedly owned by Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Allegations also emerged against Senator Hope Uzodimma, who was reported to have asked the customs to release a container of 30 bags of rice seized by the agency
