Delta politician dies in police custody
Pandemonium has struck the ancient timber city of Sapele in Delta State following the death of a prominent politician and ex-Director General of the state Direct Labour Agency, Chief Lucky Ayomanor, in the custody of the police in Sapele.
We learnt that Ayomanor reportedly slumped and died in the hands of police operatives after he was allegedly beaten and maltreated over police allegation of the discovery of firearms in his vehicle on Wednesday night.
It was gathered the late politician was arrested at 9pm around the popular Gana area of Sapele while driving to pay his elder brother a visit.
Ayomanor was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party having recently defected from the All Progressives Party.
He contested the Sapele House of Assembly seat under the Labour Party in 2011 but lost to the PDP.
A source told our correspondent that Ayomanor, who was driving his Sport Utility Vehicle, was allegedly stopped by a police team around the area.
Narrating the incident to our correspondent, a source said, “Chief Ayomanor obeyed the policemen and while he was waiting, one of the officers brought a rifle saying that it was discovered inside his car but he denied and they (police operatives) started raining punches on him.
“After a while they took him to the Sapele Police Station where they continued with the beating. Some of them were even alleged to have used their guns to hit him, which made him fell unconscious. Before they could rush him to the Central Hospital Sapele, he was already dead.”
When contacted on the incident, State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, said the deceased died at the hospital and not in the custody of his men in Sapele after he was arrested with a pump-action gun.
